A LETTER OF INTRODUCTION: CARLOS SILVA, CURRICULUM/ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

Dear Parents:

As the new Assistant Director of Dual Immersion Academy, it has been my sincere pleasure and honor to become a member of this great school community. D.I.A. enjoys a rich history of academic and cultural excellence that is the result of a collegial partnership between the school staff and parents who provide a diversity of experiences for the students.

During my first weeks in the school I put my focus on meet everyone and be acquainted with the challenges that I will face this year and see which solutions fits those challenges. I am truly honored to be appointed to this position and am looking forward to working with the dedicated staff to provide the best possible educational program for our students. Please feel free to call or stop by for a visit. If you have questions or concerns, pleased do not hesitate to contact me at 801-688-2930.

Before coming to D.I.A., my professional career was entirely dedicated to teaching; I started it as a Martial Arts teacher, then a trainer at Steel Corporation in Brazil. My first teaching job in U.S. was at the M.T.C. (B.Y.U.) in Provo, where I taught Portuguese for 2 years. Then, I came to Salt Lake City and taught Mathematics and Physical Education in Granite Park Junior High and Eisenhower Junior High at Granite School District. During the years I was getting my Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership, I served as a substitute teacher in many elementary schools in the same school district.

And my Experience as an administrator includes working for Horizonte Training Center and Bonneville Elementary, both in Salt Lake City. My last assignment was working as a Mathematics teacher at Legacy Preparatory Academy academic year of 2010-11.

I am very excited to be a part of the D.I.A. family and to closely work with everyone to make our school even better. My greatest initiative is to provide the leadership that will facilitate a school environment to provide differentiated instruction to meet the needs of each student to the best of our ability.

The educational program must be academically challenging, engage each student by linking the curriculum to previous knowledge and experience, and also be exciting to promote further exploration of new ideas.
Parents, teachers, support staff, and administration all have an important role to encourage our children to become active learners. It is my sincere desire to provide expanded opportunities for our students to acquire the skills to become productive citizens in a vastly changing society.

Through a close and partnership with everyone who is engaged in make this school a better place for our students and committed with excellence, I will do my best to improve and develop curriculum activities that fits our school’s needs. I am confident we can make our school an even a better place for our students to learn and grow.

Respectfully,

Carlos Roberto Silva
Curriculum/Assistant Director

Welcome

Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year! We’re excited to work with you and your student(s) this year. We have good news! Under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (formerly NCLB or No Child Left Behind), Dual Immersion Academy (DIA) made Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) and the Utah Performance Assessment System for Students (U-PASS) requirements. This means that the school met both Language Arts and Math standards in all grades and all subgroups. This is exciting, because state tests are all in English, and, as you know, much (most in the younger grades) of our instruction at DIA is in Spanish. Please congratulate your students on their good work. A lot of credit also goes out to our teachers for their ongoing efforts.

Additionally, we are writing to inform you that Dual Immersion Academy is still designated as a Title I school in program improvement. We need to make adequate yearly progress for two years in a row in both Language Arts and Math to exit school program improvement. As indicated above, we worked hard with both Language Arts and Math last year to achieve AYP and U-PASS in both of these major subject areas school-wide. Although DIA fell short with Math in 2009-2010, we’re proud to announce that we met state and national standards in 2010-2011.

DIA continues to look at many ways to increase student achievement and has identified some diagnostic, adaptive software programs that we will use to continue to improve instruction: Fast Forward reading software, Eduss Learning math software, and Imagine Learning second language software. We have purchased 2 mobile computer labs to both assist in the implementation of the new software and to provide more resources to teachers and students as they have research and projects to do. Additionally, teachers continue to be trained in sheltered instruction best-practices to effectively differentiate instruction according to student needs.

As you know, parent support is essential to DIA’s success. Making sure your student attends school regularly (and on time), communicating regularly with your student’s teachers, providing a quiet homework environment and helping your student with homework, monitoring your student’s television and gaming time, volunteering in the classroom, participating in school activities and events, and participating in school decision-making plans by participating in Volunteers in Action (VIA) and attending Board meetings are all important. We invite you to work with us to ensure success for every student attending Dual Immersion Academy.

Thank you so much for your many efforts and support.

Sincerely,

Michael Westover
CEO/Director
