Mike Sutton

Mike Sutton is one of the founding fathers of Dual Immersion Academy and has overseen most of the upgrades made to the school building, including the installment of an industrial kitchen and lunch facilities. Professionally, Mike is a Senior Project Manager and has worked on various projects such as, the Salt Lake City Courthouse, the LDS Conference Center, and most recently, the UCLA Engineering Building. Mike studied business at SLCC and graduated being recognized on the National Dean's List. His green thumb has earned him the title of master gardener. Mike is the proud father of two DIA students.



Julie Olsen

Julie holds a BS in Business Management and a minor in Statistics from Brigham Young University.  She began her involvement with DIA as a founding parent in the fall of 2006.  Julie and her husband both speak Spanish and recognize the value of being bilingual.  They have four children, three of whom have been attending DIA and learning Spanish as a second language. 



Jesse Soriano

Jesse Soriano, currently the Director of the State Office of Ethnic Affairs, lives in Bountiful Utah is married and has six children. He has held the positions of Director of Migrant Education and Bilingual Education in the Michigan Department of Education as well as  National Director for the Office of Bilingual Education in the United States Department of Education. He has also worked in Higher Education at the University of Texas at El Paso, Weber State University and the University of Utah. He has University degrees in Political Science , Foreign Language and School Administration. He served  in the United States Navy during the Korean War.

Mac found out about DIA in early 2008 and has been very excited about it ever since. He and his wife Susan have two children currently attending DIA, with two more anxious for their turn. Mac attended the University of Utah, where he received BS and MS degrees in Computer Science. In 2001 he and a partner started a web development company which became Code Greene LLC in 2005, where he serves as CTO. He developed his love of the Spanish language and Hispanic culture primarily while living in Argentina for two years, and greatly enjoys the opportunities DIA provides to share it with his family.



Julia Barrientos

Julia Barrientos is an education administrator with a background in community-based non-profit organizations and has focused her work on culturally and linguistically diverse populations.  She currently serves as the Deputy Head Start Director for Centro de la Familia de Utah where she provides vision, guidance and oversight to five Head Start centers serving 484 children and their families. Before joining Centro de la Familia, Ms. Barrientos was a founder of the Dual Immersion Academy and also served as Director providing over 400 preschool, elementary and middle school children with an education in both Spanish and English.
 
Julia worked in fund development for Westminster College’s Foundation and Government Relations. Prior to that, Julia served as Community Education Manager for West High School in Salt Lake City and worked in the Bilingual and Refugee Program at Mountain View Elementary School, also in Salt Lake City. Before moving back to Utah in 2002, Julia lived in Portland, Oregon for fifteen years where she  she founded a highly successful bilingual Spanish/ English high school with the Oregon Council for Hispanic Advancement and held the position of Director of Alternative Education. Julia coordinated the establishment of thirteen community-based family learning centers in rural El Salvador. In the early 90s, Julia served and worked with migrant families in Head Start in Oregon as a health promoter and later as an assistant health manager.
 
Beyond the field of education, Julia has served in community-based organizations where she has been an advocate for parolees transitioning back into the community, gang-affected youth, Latino day-laborers, migrant farm workers, survivors of domestic violence, women seeking a way out of the sex industry, and Latinos living with HIV and AIDS. Julia has also lived and studied in Japan and in Senegal, West Africa. Julia lives in Salt Lake City with her husband and her three sons who attend DIA.
